Alabama has processed 1.35 million special $150 tax refunds; What to do if you haven’t gotten yours

Alabama officials said they are working “around the clock” to get special one-time rebates back in the hands of state taxpayers.

Gov. Kay Ivey’s office announced on Wednesday more than 850,000 direct deposits and 500,000 rebate checks have been processed since Dec. 1, the start date authorized by law. Some 1.9 million Alabamians are eligible for the payments – $150 for single, head of family and married filing separately or $300 for married filing jointly.

“As the country continues to face tough times, Alabama taxpayers are working harder to stretch their paychecks to cover expenses, and for some, this little bit goes a long way,” said Governor Ivey. “Most of the rebate funds should arrive by mid-December. In fact, I am already hearing from many who have received their rebates.”

To qualify for the rebates, taxpayers must have filed a 2021 individual income tax return with the Alabama Department of Revenue by Oct. 17, 2022. Non-residents, estates or trusts or anyone who was claimed as a dependent during the 2021 tax year does not qualify.

Direct deposits were made into the account of record for a taxpayer’s 2022 refund. Paper checks that have been processed may take several days to deliver. If you are eligible for a refund and have not received it by Dec. 15, call the ADOR at 334-242-1170, and select option 1.
